Scotland is so rich in awe-inspiring sights and historically significant landmarks that it can sometimes be hard to know where to begin! That’s why I’ve put together this comprehensive Scotland elopement guide for international couples filled with essential tips and must-see locations.
Eloping in Scotland allows you to really explore this stunning country and get up close and personal with the landscapes and historical landmarks! From the majestic Highlands to the mystical Isle of Skye with its otherworldly rock formations, Scotland makes you feel like you’ve been transported into a fairytale.
The fact that the country is filled with ancient castles — each steeped in its own rich and unique history — only adds to the magical atmosphere here! Here’s everything you need to know about how to elope in Scotland.
How To Get To Scotland
By Plane:
Overall, the best airport to fly into will be the Edinburgh Airport (EDI) for the most flight options and best rates. It’s about a 2.5-3 hour drive to Glencoe, a 5-5.5 hour drive to Isle of Skye, and about 1.5 hour drive to Loch Lomond. Glasgow Airport (GLA) is also a great option to weigh as the rates can be competitive depending on where you are flying from and drive times are similar. If your elopement will be taking place completely in the Scottish Highlands, Inverness Airport (INV) is much closer being only about a 2 hour drive from Isle of Skye, but it is a much smaller airport with limited international flights and often looks like having a UK or European connection.
By Car:
You will need a rental car while you explore Scotland! You’ll be able to get to most places in a standard sedan, and honestly having a smaller car will benefit you for the narrow roads and single-track passing places! Roads in more rural areas are very small and remember Scotland drives on the left side of the road! It is common for rentals to be manual, so be sure to double check that your rental has an automatic transmission if you don’t drive manual. I’d recommend reserving your car rental sooner rather than later—automatic transmission rentals can get booked up fast! As an American, be sure to get your $20 International Drivers License before you go!
Pro Tip: Download offline Google Maps directions on your phone so that even when you lose service, you can still receive navigation. As beautiful as the scenery is, getting lost probably isn’t on your to-do list!
The Best Time Of Year To Elope In Scotland
Deciding when to elope in Scotland is a delightful part of the planning process, and the truth is, each season offers its own unique magic!
Spring (March to May)
Brings a sense of renewal, with wildflowers beginning to bloom and the landscapes turning a vibrant green. You might catch some lingering snow on the mountain tops for dramatic photos, and the days are getting longer, offering more daylight for your adventure. However, be prepared for the possibility of some rain showers.
Summer (June to August)
Boasts the warmest temperatures and the longest daylight hours, perfect for exploring and enjoying Scotland's stunning scenery late into the evening. This also means that summer offers some amazing opportunities for spectacular elopement photos since the longer daylight hours mean more flexibility for timing and for planning that one perfect shot. The landscapes are lush and green, and you might even see the heather in bloom towards the end of the season. Keep in mind that this is also the peak tourist season, so popular spots may be busier.
Autumn (September to November)
Often considered a sweet spot by many. The landscapes transform into a breathtaking tapestry of oranges, reds, and browns, creating a wonderfully romantic and atmospheric backdrop. The crowds have typically thinned out, and you're more likely to experience dramatic, moody skies. Plus, the earlier sunsets can provide beautiful golden hour light for your ceremony and photos.
Winter (December to February)
Offers a unique and often overlooked charm. The weather is certainly cold, but with a bit of planning, preparation, and appropriate attire, you can definitely make it work! Imagine exchanging vows amidst snow-dusted mountains for a truly enchanting and intimate experience. The days are shorter, offering soft, beautiful light throughout the day, and you'll likely have many locations all to yourselves. While there are countless breathtaking spots in Scotland that offer unforgettable surroundings, there are a few iconic spots that absolutely every couple should consider:
Old Man Of Storr
This striking rock formation, which stands at an imposing 55 meters, is hands down one of the most iconic landmarks on the Isle of Skye. While Scotland has no shortage of ancient and historical landmarks, it’s safe to say Old Man Of Storr might be the most historical of them all — geologists estimate that it was created over 60 million years ago in a landslide caused by an Earth-shattering volcanic eruption!
Accessing Old Man Of Storr requires trekking down a path that weaves through the Isle and offers some of the most picturesque views in all of Scotland (or anywhere else in the world for that matter).
The Quiraing
Any couple planning an Isle of Skye elopement should absolutely consider checking out The Quiraing.
This legendary path through the Isle of Skye passes through some of the most unforgettable landscapes on the Isle! There are also plenty of unique locations for exchanging vows, exploring, or just stopping for a moment to take it all in.

Do We Need a Permit to Elope in Scotland?
In most cases, no permit is required to elope in Scotland. You’re free to choose from many of the country’s iconic landscapes—as long as you follow local regulations and Leave No Trace. I’ll help you navigate all the logistics so your elopement is legally sound and responsibly planned. There are private locations such as castles where you may need to reserve if you want it to be part of your elopement / wedding experience!
Can Foreigners Get Married in Scotland?
Yes. U.S. citizens and citizens in other countries can legally get married in Scotland, and the marriage will be legally recognized in the United States. Luckily, the process of getting legally married in Scotland as a foreigner is much easier compared to other countries!
How to Get a Scotland Marriage License
If you are wanting to legally get married in Scotland, here is the step by step process you will need to take to get your marriage license. If you choose this route, I strongly recommend working with a local wedding planner. They can manage the paperwork, submit documents, and coordinate required appointments on your behalf, making the process significantly smoother.
Choose your ceremony type. Scotland allows:
Civil ceremonies (performed by a registrar)
Religious ceremonies
Humanist ceremonies (very popular for elopements and fully legal)
Humanist ceremonies are especially loved by couples because they’re personal, flexible, and can be held almost anywhere.
Obtain and fill out the required documents below.
Marriage Notice Forms (one for each partner)
A certificate of marital status from both parties, also known as a no marriage record.
Passport copies
Evidence of where you live (ex: a bill with your address)
The original copies of your birth certificate
Marriage Notice Fee (paid to the local registrar)
If divorced —a divorce decree
If widowed — An official document showing that the assets and liabilities of the deceased spouse has been finalized/divided
Send in all the documents above to the Registrar in your elopement area 1-3 months before your wedding date. I ALWAYS recommend sending it in a bit earlier around the 3 month out range just in case there has been an error or mistake that needs corrected.
Choose an authorized officiant. Your ceremony must be conducted by a district registrar or a licensed celebrant. A family member or friend cannot legally officiate unless they are registered in Scotland.
Within the final days before your ceremony you’ll pick up your Marriage Schedule in person from the local registrar. This document is what gets signed during your ceremony. After the ceremony, the signed schedule is returned to the registrar to officially register your marriage. Once registered, your Scottish marriage is legally recognized in the United States and no additional steps are required after returning to the U.S.

If this process seems overwhelming, I always recommend getting married in your home country, then having a symbolic ceremony in Scotland! This is always the easiest and most stress-free option. There are also local planners you can hire who will specifically help with the marriage license portion.
Note: This process is specifically for foreigners getting married in Scotland. If you reside in Scotland or some of the surrounding European countries, the process will be different.

Must Know Scotland Elopement and Travel Tips
Eloping in Scotland is equal parts romantic and adventurous—but the experience is best when you understand how travel, weather, and local customs really work. These are the biggest tips couples need to know before planning their Scotland elopement.
Distances Take Longer Than They Look
Scotland may look small on a map, but narrow roads, sheep crossings, weather, and photo stops slow everything down. Always pad your drive times, especially in the Highlands and on islands.
Rent a Car (and Book an Automatic Early)
A rental car is essential for most Scotland elopements. Many rental cars will be manual be default and automatics are limited and sell out early. Many roads will be narrow and single-track. On these roads, there will be passing places and it is essential to use them correctly and yield to uphill traffic. Remember to go slow and be patient. If you’re not comfortable driving narrow roads, choose lodging closer to your ceremony location. Also a reminder that in the UK, you’ll be driving on the left side of the road!
Plan Around Light, Not the Clock
In summer, Scotland has very long daylight hours (sometimes 18+ hours). In winter, daylight is limited. Instead of rigid timelines, plan your day around soft light, weather windows, and energy levels.
Pack Layers—Always
Even in summer, you’ll want a waterproof jacket, warm layers, and comfortable walking shoes. Wind is often colder than expected, especially near cliffs and lochs.
Respect the Land (Access Rights Matter)
Scotland has “right to roam” laws, but they come with responsibility:
Leave no trace
Respect livestock and private homes
Avoid blocking roads or paths
Being respectful ensures these freedoms remain available to future couples.
