Hayley and Gunny had already spent 18 years building a life together. They'd been together since middle school, growing up side by side through every season of life. By the time their wedding day arrived, they already felt married in every way that mattered. Their elopement wasn't about finally making a commitment. It was about honoring one they had already kept for nearly two decades.
And honestly, that's what made this day so incredibly special.
Instead of feeling pressured by timelines or expectations, they waited until they could celebrate exactly the way they envisioned. Looking back on it now, it was one of the most intentional elopement days I've ever had the privilege of documenting, and without question, one of my favorites.
Why They Chose to Elope on the Southern Oregon Coast
Years before getting engaged, Hayley and Gunny had taken a road trip along the Oregon Coast and completely fell in love with it.
The dramatic cliffs. The rugged beaches. The quiet stretches of coastline where it feels like you've stepped into another country entirely.
When it came time to choose where they would get married, there wasn't much debate. They packed up in Los Angeles and hit the road once again, retracing one of their favorite adventures together. Their wedding became part of an even bigger journey as they continued north along the Pacific Coast Highway toward Washington's Olympic Peninsula before eventually making their way back home.
Instead of squeezing a honeymoon around their wedding, they turned the entire road trip into the experience.
It's one of my favorite reminders that your elopement doesn't have to be a single day. It can become an adventure you'll remember forever.
An Intimate Cliffside Ceremony That Felt Like Iceland
Their ceremony took place at one of Southern Oregon's hidden gems.
Standing on the cliffs, it was hard to believe we were still in the United States.
The vibrant green hills rolled into dramatic black volcanic cliffs, with waves crashing against dark rock below. Between the rugged coastline and the moody landscape, it felt strikingly similar to Iceland or Ireland.
With only Hayley's parents and Gunny's best friend present, the entire ceremony felt incredibly peaceful. No distractions. No timeline to rush through. Just the people who mattered most.
Then came their vows.
There are moments during weddings that stay with you forever, and this was one of them.
Listening to two people who had spent 18 years growing together promise to continue choosing one another was emotional in the best possible way. Their words weren't filled with grand promises about forever. They were reflections on everything they'd already built together.
I'll admit it. I cried.
Afterward, we spent hours exploring the cliffs, wandering through the windswept grass, laughing between portraits, and simply soaking in how magical the landscape felt.
Everything about the afternoon had this whimsical, vintage quality that matched their relationship perfectly.

As golden hour approached, we made the short drive to the coast for sunset.
If you've never explored Southern Oregon, one of the best parts is how quickly the scenery changes. Within minutes, we had traded towering cliffs for wide-open beaches, rolling sand dunes, and massive sea stacks rising from the ocean.
The evening couldn't have been more perfect.
Hayley and Gunny wandered barefoot through the sand, ran along the shoreline, climbed around the sea stacks, and watched the sun slowly disappear over the Pacific.
Then two very special guests joined the celebration.
Their dogs came running down the beach, tails wagging, ready to celebrate alongside them.
Watching the four of them play fetch together might have been one of my favorite moments of the entire day. It wasn't staged or planned. It was simply them living one of their favorite days together with the companions who have been part of their story all along.
Those are always the moments that matter most.
Why Intentional Elopements Always Feel Different
One thing I kept thinking throughout the day was how completely themselves they were.
Nothing felt rushed.
Nothing felt performative.
Every decision they made reflected who they are as a couple.
They waited 18 years to get married because they wanted to do it their way.
They chose a place that already held meaning.
They invited only the people they couldn't imagine celebrating without.
They brought their dogs.
They turned their wedding into an unforgettable road trip.
By the end of the evening, it didn't feel like I had just photographed clients.
It felt like I'd spent the day adventuring with friends, and honestly, that's one of my favorite parts of this job.

Just like Hayley and Gunny, you don't have to limit your experience to one destination. The Pacific Coast Highway offers countless incredible stops from Northern California through Oregon and into Washington, making it the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable wedding adventure.
3. Include the things that matter most
Whether that's bringing your dogs, inviting just a few loved ones, or building your day around your favorite activities, don't be afraid to make your wedding feel personal. Those details are almost always what couples remember most.
4. Stay for sunset
Southern Oregon is known for some truly spectacular sunsets, especially when the sky lights up behind the sea stacks. Planning portraits around golden hour is absolutely worth it if your schedule allows.
5. Embrace the weather
The Oregon Coast is beautiful because it's wild. Wind, fog, and shifting clouds often create the most dramatic and romantic photographs. Pack layers, trust the process, and know that every weather condition brings its own kind of magic.
