How to Elope on the Amalfi Coast in 2026

The Amalfi Coast feels like one of those places that almost doesn’t seem real until you’re standing there yourself. The pastel cliffside villages, winding coastal roads, hidden beaches, lemon groves, and views over the Mediterranean make it one of the most breathtaking places in the world to start your marriage. And honestly? It’s easy to see why so many couples dream about eloping here.

An Amalfi Coast elopement is perfect for couples who want their wedding day to feel equal parts intentional, adventurous, and deeply romantic. Whether you’re envisioning exchanging vows overlooking the sea in Positano, wandering the quiet streets of Ravello at sunrise, celebrating with a candlelit dinner in Amalfi, or spending your wedding day exploring the coastline by private boat, this area offers such a beautiful balance between luxury, intimacy, and adventure.

One of the things I love most about the Amalfi Coast is how versatile it is for elopements. You can keep things incredibly simple with just the two of you and a scenic overlook, or turn it into a full multi-day experience with your closest people exploring the coast together. There are truly endless ways to make an Amalfi Coast elopement feel uniquely yours.

But planning an elopement in Italy can also feel overwhelming at first. Between figuring out the best towns to stay in, transportation logistics, legal marriage requirements, timing around crowds, and choosing the best season to visit, there’s a lot to navigate. That’s exactly why I created this guide.

Inside this ultimate Amalfi Coast elopement guide, you’ll find everything you need to know about planning an unforgettable wedding experience along the coast — from the best places to elope, where to stay, and when to visit, to travel tips, legal information, activity ideas, and real advice for creating a wedding day that actually feels like you.

How To Get To The Amalfi Coast

By Plane:

Getting to the Amalfi Coast is actually much easier than most couples expect, but your exact travel logistics will depend on which towns you plan to stay in and whether you want to explore other parts of Italy before or after your elopement.

Most couples flying internationally will arrive through one of these major airports:

Naples International Airport – the closest and most convenient airport to the Amalfi Coast
Rome Fiumicino Airport – often cheaper for international flights and easy to connect from via train

If you’re planning to stay directly on the Amalfi Coast, most couples will fly into Naples and then continue by private transfer, rental car, ferry, or train connection.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Amalfi Coast roads can be slow and winding, especially during peak season. I always recommend giving yourself a buffer day or two at the beginning of your trip so you’re not immediately rushing into your wedding day after a long international flight.

By Car:

Renting a car can be helpful if you’re planning to road trip through Italy before or after your elopement, but honestly, many couples choose not to drive directly on the Amalfi Coast itself.

The roads here are famously narrow, cliffside, and busy during peak season, and parking can be extremely limited and expensive in towns like Positano. Unless you’re very comfortable driving internationally on tight mountain roads, I typically recommend using a combination of private drivers, ferries, and trains instead.

That said, if you are exploring beyond the coastline, having a car gives you a lot more flexibility for visiting smaller towns, wineries, or regions like Tuscany afterward.

For reference:

Naples → Positano: ~1.5–2.5 hours depending on traffic
Naples → Ravello: ~1.5–2 hours
Rome → Amalfi Coast: ~3.5–4.5 hours

If you do rent a car, I highly recommend booking something compact. Large SUVs can become stressful very quickly on the narrow coastal roads and in tiny parking garages.

U.S. citizens can legally drive in Italy with a valid driver’s license, but Italy does require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which is inexpensive and easy to obtain before your trip through AAA.

Pro Tip: Download offline Google Maps before arriving. Cell service can occasionally be spotty along the coastline and mountain roads, and offline maps are incredibly helpful when navigating ferry ports, winding roads, and small coastal villages.

By Train:

Traveling by train in Italy is honestly one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to get around, especially if you’re planning to visit multiple cities before or after your elopement.

Italy’s high-speed train system connects major cities like Rome, Florence, Venice, and Naples incredibly efficiently, and many couples choose to combine train travel with ferries or private transfers once they reach the coast.

The most common route is:

Rome → Naples by high-speed train (~1–1.5 hours)
Naples → Amalfi Coast by ferry, private transfer, or regional transit

You can also take the train to:

• Salerno – a really convenient access point for ferries to Amalfi, Positano, and other coastal towns
• Sorrento – accessible via regional train from Naples and often used as a home base for Amalfi Coast trips

One of my favorite options for couples is taking the high-speed train into Salerno and then hopping on a ferry along the coastline. It’s such a scenic and much less stressful way to arrive compared to sitting in coastal traffic for hours.

I highly recommend booking train tickets in advance if you’re traveling during peak season, especially from May through September. High-speed trains can sell out quickly, and prices tend to increase closer to your travel dates.

The Best Time Of Year To Elope On The Amalfi Coast

Choosing the best season is one of the biggest parts of planning an Amalfi Coast elopement because the overall experience can look completely different depending on the time of year you visit.

Everything from crowd levels and pricing to weather, accessibility, and the overall feel of the coastline shifts throughout the seasons. Some couples dream of lively summer evenings and beach clubs, while others want quiet cliffside towns and empty streets at sunrise.

The good news is that the Amalfi Coast is beautiful year-round — it just depends on the type of experience you want your elopement day to feel like.

Spring (March – May)

Spring is honestly one of the absolute best times to elope on the Amalfi Coast.

During this time of year, the coastline starts waking back up after the quieter winter season. Flowers and lemon trees begin blooming, temperatures are comfortable, and the towns feel lively again without being overwhelmingly crowded yet.

This is an especially beautiful season if you want:

• Mild weather for exploring
• Fewer crowds compared to summer
• More affordable accommodations
• Green landscapes and blooming flowers
• A more peaceful overall atmosphere

April and May are particularly incredible because you’ll often get warm sunny days without the intense summer heat.

One thing to keep in mind is that ferry schedules and seasonal businesses may still be limited in early spring, especially in March.

Summer (June – August)

Summer is peak season on the Amalfi Coast and the most popular time for elopements.

This is when you’ll get the classic Amalfi experience everyone pictures: vibrant beach clubs, bustling piazzas, warm Mediterranean evenings, boats lining the coastline, and long sunny days perfect for exploring.

Summer is ideal if you want:

• Hot beach weather
• Boat days and swimming
• Lively towns and nightlife
• Long daylight hours
• The iconic “Italian summer” atmosphere

However, summer also brings:

• Large crowds, especially in Positano
• Higher hotel and vendor pricing
• Heavy traffic along the coastal roads
• Limited availability if you don’t book early
• Hot midday temperatures, especially in July and August

If you’re eloping in summer, I highly recommend planning sunrise or sunset portraits to avoid the busiest parts of the day and get softer, more comfortable lighting.

Fall (September – November)

Fall is one of the most underrated and honestly one of the most magical times to elope on the Amalfi Coast.

September still feels very summery, with warm weather and swimmable water temperatures, but the intense peak-season crowds slowly begin to fade.

By October, the coastline becomes much quieter and more relaxed while still offering beautiful weather and golden evening light.

This season is perfect if you want:

• Warm weather without peak summer heat
• Smaller crowds
• Better hotel pricing
• Romantic golden light
• A slower, more intimate atmosphere

September and early October are especially ideal because many ferries, restaurants, and beach clubs are still fully operating while the coast feels less chaotic than mid-summer.

Late November can start becoming rainier and quieter as many seasonal businesses begin closing for winter.

Winter (December – February)

Winter on the Amalfi Coast is completely different from the classic summer version most people imagine — but honestly, it can be incredibly romantic for the right couple.

During winter, the coastline becomes much quieter and slower paced. You won’t find packed beaches or buzzing beach clubs, but you will get peaceful towns, dramatic moody coastal views, and a much more local experience.

Winter can be a beautiful option if you want:

• Minimal crowds
• Lower accommodation costs
• Cozy, romantic vibes
• A more relaxed pace
• Dramatic coastal weather and scenery

However, winter also comes with more limitations:

• Many hotels, restaurants, and ferries close seasonally
• Cooler temperatures and increased rain
• Shorter daylight hours
• Less predictable weather overall

If you’re considering a winter elopement, towns like Ravello or Amalfi often stay a bit more active than smaller seasonal villages.

So, When Is The Best Time To Elope On The Amalfi Coast?

For most couples, late spring or early fall (May, September, or October) offers the best balance of weather, accessibility, and overall experience.

If you want:

• Warm weather + fewer crowds → May or September
• The classic Italian summer experience → June–August
• Romantic, quieter vibes → October
• Cozy and peaceful coastal scenery → Winter

There’s really no one “perfect” season to elope here — it all comes down to what kind of experience you want to create together.

The Best Places to Elope on the Amalfi Coast

One of the best parts about planning an Amalfi Coast elopement is that every town along the coastline has such a different feel and experience to offer. Some areas are lively and luxurious, while others feel quiet, intimate, and tucked away from the crowds.

Whether you’re dreaming of exchanging vows overlooking the sea, chartering a private boat along the coastline, wandering through colorful cliffside villages, or hosting a candlelit dinner with your closest people, there’s truly a location here for every type of elopement experience.

Here are some of the best places to elope on the Amalfi Coast:

the colorful homes of Positano along the Amalfi Coast

Positano

Positano is easily the most iconic town on the Amalfi Coast — and for good reason.

The colorful cliffside buildings, beach views, luxury hotels, and winding pedestrian streets make it feel straight out of a movie. If you’ve ever seen those classic Amalfi Coast photos with pastel buildings stacked above the sea, chances are they were taken here.

Positano is perfect for couples wanting:

• Luxury and iconic scenery
• Beautiful hotels and villas
• Boat elopement opportunities
• A lively atmosphere
• Incredible sunrise or sunset portraits

Because it’s the most popular town on the coast, it can also be one of the busiest and most expensive — especially during summer. Sunrise ceremonies and weekday elopements can make a huge difference if you want a more intimate feel here.

view of the Amalfi Coastline from a garden in Ravello

Ravello

If you want something romantic, peaceful, and slightly removed from the heavy crowds, Ravello is one of the absolute best options on the coast.

Unlike Positano, Ravello sits higher in the mountains overlooking the sea, which gives it some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in all of Italy.

Ravello is known for:

• Elegant gardens and villas
• Quiet, romantic atmosphere
• Incredible ceremony locations
• Luxury without feeling chaotic
• Stunning mountain-meets-sea views

Some of the most iconic ceremony locations here are the historic villa gardens overlooking the coastline, which honestly feel unreal in person.

This is one of my favorite options for couples wanting an upscale, intimate experience without the overwhelming crowds of Positano.

a landscape photo of the town of Amalfi

Amalfi

Amalfi is one of the best all-around options for couples wanting convenience, charm, and easy access to the rest of the coastline.

The town itself feels historic and vibrant, with beautiful architecture, walkable streets, ferries, restaurants, and a central location for exploring nearby villages.

Amalfi is a great fit if you want:

• Easier logistics and ferry access
• Historic Italian charm
• A mix of luxury and accessibility
• More central accommodations
• A balance between lively and relaxed

It’s also a great home base if you plan to explore multiple areas of the coast during your trip.

boats floating on the water in Praiano

Praiano

Praiano is one of the most underrated towns on the Amalfi Coast and such a hidden gem for elopements.

Located between Positano and Amalfi, Praiano feels much quieter and more local while still offering incredible coastal views.

This is the perfect option for couples wanting:

• Fewer tourists
• More privacy and seclusion
• Beautiful sunset views
• Relaxed, slow-paced vibes
• Luxury villas without the Positano crowds

Praiano especially shines for couples renting private villas or wanting a more intentional, peaceful wedding experience.

a landscape photo of Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast

Sorrento

While technically not directly on the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is one of the most popular places for couples to stay during their elopement experience.

It’s much easier to access from Naples, has larger hotels and transportation options, and works really well as a home base if you’re planning day trips around the region.

Sorrento is ideal for couples wanting:

• Easier travel logistics
• More budget flexibility
• Access to ferries and trains
• A balance of city and coastal vibes
• To explore places like Capri or Pompeii during their trip

a landscape photo of Capri

Capri

If you’re envisioning a luxurious and dramatic island elopement experience, Capri is absolutely worth considering.

Accessible by ferry from the mainland, Capri offers stunning cliffside views, upscale hotels, hidden coves, and incredible boat access around the island.

Capri is perfect for couples wanting:

• Luxury island vibes
• Private boat experiences
• Dramatic coastal scenery
• High-end hotels and restaurants
• A more exclusive feel

This is an especially incredible option for couples planning multi-day celebrations or wanting their elopement to feel like a true European getaway experience.

Do We Need a Permit to Elope on The Amalfi Coast?

Permit requirements for an Amalfi Coast elopement can vary quite a bit depending on where exactly you’re planning to get married and what your day will look like.

Unlike some national park destinations, there isn’t one single permit system that covers the entire coastline. Different towns, venues, beaches, villas, and public spaces may all have different rules and requirements.

In general, whether or not you need a permit depends on:

• Your exact ceremony location
• Whether the space is public or private
• The size of your group
• Whether you’re bringing in vendors or decor
• If you’re setting up anything like chairs, arches, tables, or florals

For many small elopements with just the couple, an officiant, photographer, and maybe a few guests, permits can often be very simple — especially if you’re staying low-impact and choosing private villas or hotel venues.

However, additional planning is usually needed if you’re planning:

• A larger guest count
• A ceremony in a heavily trafficked public area
• Decor installations or furniture rentals
• Drone photography
• Live music or amplified sound
• Boat charters or private beach setups

Some of the most popular locations along the coast, especially in Positano and Amalfi, can have stricter regulations due to tourism and crowd management, particularly during peak season.

It’s also important to know that many iconic ceremony locations on the Amalfi Coast are actually private properties or villas rather than public viewpoints. In many cases, booking the venue itself handles the permission side of things automatically, which can simplify the process significantly.

If you’re dreaming about exchanging vows somewhere more adventurous or secluded along the coastline, working with a planner or photographer familiar with the region can make a huge difference when it comes to understanding local logistics and avoiding unexpected restrictions.

Pro Tip: I help all of my couples navigate location logistics and permit considerations throughout the planning process so you don’t have to try and figure out confusing Italian regulations entirely on your own.

Can Foreigners Get Married in Italy?

Yes — foreigners absolutely can legally get married in Italy, including on the Amalfi Coast. However, the legal process in Italy is definitely more involved than some other international elopement destinations, so it’s important to understand what’s required before deciding whether you want to legally marry during your trip or have a symbolic ceremony instead.

For U.S. couples, legally getting married in Italy typically involves:

• Valid passports
• Birth certificates
• Divorce or death certificates if previously married
• An affidavit or declaration stating there are no legal obstacles to your marriage
• Appointments with U.S. consulates or local Italian offices
• Official translations and authentication of some documents depending on your circumstances

The exact requirements can vary depending on your nationality, where you’re getting married, and whether your ceremony is civil, religious, or symbolic.

One important thing to know is that legal civil ceremonies in Italy generally must take place at approved town halls or government-authorized venues. Some towns along the Amalfi Coast offer absolutely stunning civil ceremony locations, but availability can book out far in advance — especially in places like Positano and Ravello.

Because the legal process can feel a bit more complicated and time-sensitive, many international couples choose one of two options:

Option 1: Legally Marry In Italy

This is a great option for couples who want their actual legal wedding date to take place on the Amalfi Coast and don’t mind handling additional paperwork and appointments during the planning process.

Many couples choose to work with a local wedding planner for this route because they can help coordinate translations, appointments, timelines, and required documentation.

Option 2: Legally Marry At Home + Have A Symbolic Ceremony In Italy

Honestly, this is the route a huge percentage of couples choose for Amalfi Coast elopements.

Many couples legally marry in their home country beforehand and then have a completely intentional, meaningful ceremony experience in Italy without worrying about paperwork, legal appointments, or timing restrictions while traveling internationally.

The best part is that your symbolic ceremony can still feel every bit as emotional and personal as a legal ceremony. Most couples exchange vows, rings, and fully celebrate the day exactly the same way — it simply removes the stress of navigating Italian legal logistics during your trip.

This option also gives you much more flexibility when it comes to ceremony locations, timelines, and creating a relaxed experience focused entirely on being present together.

For most couples planning an Amalfi Coast elopement, there’s honestly no wrong option here. It really comes down to whether having the legal marriage happen in Italy feels important to you, or whether you’d rather simplify the process and fully focus on the experience itself once you arrive.

Where To Stay For Your Amalfi Coast Elopement

Choosing where to stay on the Amalfi Coast is honestly one of the biggest parts of shaping the overall experience of your elopement.

Some couples want a luxury cliffside hotel with iconic views and full-service amenities, while others want a private villa where they can host an intimate dinner with their closest people. The best place for you really depends on the kind of atmosphere you want your wedding experience to have.

One thing to know before booking accommodations on the Amalfi Coast: logistics matter a lot here. Many towns involve steep stairs, limited parking, winding roads, and lots of walking. Staying somewhere beautiful but convenient can make a huge difference in how relaxed your experience feels.

Here are some of the best hotels and villas for an Amalfi Coast elopement:

My Biggest Recommendation For Amalfi Coast Accommodations

If your budget allows, prioritize booking accommodations with:

  • A terrace or balcony

  • Sea views

  • Good walking accessibility

  • Space for getting ready photos

  • Privacy

Your hotel or villa becomes such a huge part of the overall elopement experience here, especially because so much of the Amalfi Coast magic happens slowly — drinking limoncello on a terrace, watching sunset over the water, sharing dinner overlooking the cliffs, and simply soaking in the atmosphere together.

Pro Tip: If you are planning to be having guests at any point of the day for either a ceremony, intimate dinner, or reception, be sure to get an event-friendly rental! Not all vacation rentals are event friendly and nothing would be worse than getting kicked out by your host mid elopement experience! Amalfi Coast Elopement Activity Ideas

One of the best parts about eloping on the Amalfi Coast is that your wedding day can feel like so much more than just a ceremony.

This isn’t about squeezing a few portraits into a packed wedding schedule. It’s about creating an intentional experience together — one that actually feels like you and allows you to fully soak in everything this coastline has to offer.

Whether your dream day feels adventurous, luxurious, romantic, relaxed, or somewhere in between, there are endless ways to turn your Amalfi Coast elopement into an unforgettable experience.

Here are some incredible activity ideas to incorporate into your day:

  • Charter a private boat and explore the coastline from the water

  • Exchange vows overlooking the cliffs at sunrise

  • Wander the colorful streets of Positano before the crowds arrive

  • Share a private candlelit dinner overlooking the sea

  • Take a sunset cruise along the coastline with champagne and music

  • Explore hidden beaches and sea caves by boat

  • Visit Capri for the day

  • Swim in the Mediterranean after your ceremony

  • Stay in a private villa with an infinity pool overlooking the coast

  • Enjoy a private chef experience at your Airbnb or villa

  • Take a cooking class together and learn how to make fresh pasta or limoncello

  • Explore the gardens and viewpoints in Ravello

  • Ride a vintage Vespa through the coastal villages

  • Have an intimate picnic overlooking the water

  • Spend the evening slow dancing on a terrace at sunset

  • Visit lemon groves tucked into the cliffsides

  • Explore nearby towns like Sorrento or Amalfi

  • Take a ferry ride between the coastal villages

  • Watch the sunrise from a quiet scenic overlook

  • Spend a few days island hopping around southern Italy afterward

  • Have a relaxed beach day before or after your elopement

  • Book a luxury spa experience overlooking the sea

  • End the night with aperitivos and live music in a piazza

One of the things I love most about Amalfi Coast elopements is how customizable they are.

You can have a completely luxurious experience with private boats, upscale villas, and multi-course dinners, or you can keep things incredibly simple and intentional with just the two of you exploring the coastline together all day.

There’s honestly no “right” way to do it.

The best Amalfi Coast elopements are the ones that feel immersive — where you slow down, experience the culture, stay present together, and build a wedding experience around the things you genuinely love doing as a couple.

Amalfi Coast Elopement Timeline Examples

One of the best parts about planning an Amalfi Coast elopement is that your timeline can feel incredibly relaxed and intentional compared to a traditional wedding day.

Instead of rushing from event to event, you actually have space to slow down, explore, and fully experience the coastline together.

The exact flow of your day will depend on the season, your ceremony location, whether you’re including guests, and what kinds of activities you want to incorporate. But honestly, the best timelines usually leave plenty of room for spontaneity and soaking everything in rather than overpacking the day.

Here are a few example Amalfi Coast elopement timelines to help you start envisioning what your day could look like:

My Biggest Timeline Tip For Amalfi Coast Elopements

The Amalfi Coast is beautiful, but it’s also busy and slower-paced than many couples expect.

Traffic can take longer than expected, ferries can occasionally run behind, and towns involve lots of stairs and walking. Building buffer time into your timeline makes a huge difference and helps the entire experience feel relaxed rather than stressful.

I also highly recommend prioritizing:

  • Sunrise or sunset for portraits

  • Midday downtime

  • One major activity instead of overpacking the day

  • A slower, experience-focused pace

The best Amalfi Coast elopements usually feel less like a wedding production and more like the best day of your lives spent exploring Italy together.

Must Know Amalfi Coast Elopement and Travel Tips

Planning an elopement on the Amalfi Coast is honestly such an incredible experience — but it definitely comes with its own unique logistics and travel considerations.

The Amalfi Coast moves at a slower pace, roads can be unpredictable, and popular areas get busy very quickly during peak season. A little preparation ahead of time will make your experience feel so much smoother, more relaxed, and way more enjoyable once you arrive.

Here are the biggest things couples should know before planning an Amalfi Coast elopement:

Don’t Overpack Your Timeline

This is probably my biggest Amalfi Coast tip overall.

Everything here takes longer than you expect.

Between coastal traffic, ferries, stairs, crowds, and winding roads, trying to cram too many activities or locations into one day can quickly become stressful.

The couples who enjoy their Amalfi Coast elopement the most are usually the ones who slow down.

Instead of trying to visit five locations in one day, focus on:

  • One or two meaningful locations

  • A relaxed timeline

  • Intentional experiences together

  • Building in downtime

Trust me — sitting on a terrace drinking limoncello together while watching sunset is going to feel way more memorable than rushing around trying to “see everything.”

Sunrise Is Your Best Friend

The Amalfi Coast gets busy. Like… really busy.

Especially in places like Positano during peak season.

If you want more privacy, empty streets, softer lighting, less stress, and better portraits, then sunrise is absolutely worth considering.

The difference between Positano at 6:30 AM versus midday is honestly wild. Sunrise allows you to experience the coastline in a much quieter and more intimate way before the crowds arrive. Positano’s busiest hours are 9am - 6pm when ferries and buses unload tourists. Plan your ceremony or portraits outside of those hours for the best atmosphere.

Give Yourself Buffer Days

If there’s one thing I recommend to every Amalfi Coast couple, it’s this:

Do not fly in the day before your elopement.

Travel delays happen. Ferries occasionally get canceled. Traffic can take far longer than expected.

Adding at least 1–2 extra buffer days before your elopement gives you:

  • Flexibility if travel plans shift

  • Time to adjust to jet lag

  • Room for weather changes

  • A much more relaxed experience overall

Honestly, the Amalfi Coast is best experienced slowly anyway.

Give Yourself Buffer Days (This Is Non-Negotiable)

If there’s one thing I recommend to every couple—it’s this.

Add at least 1–2 extra days around your elopement.

This gives you:

  • Flexibility if weather shifts

  • Backup options for helicopter or mountain access

  • Time to actually enjoy the experience instead of rushing through it

New Zealand rewards couples who slow down.

The Stairs Are No Joke

This is something couples rarely realize until they arrive.

Many Amalfi Coast towns are built vertically into the cliffs, which means stairs are everywhere, especially in Positano.

You’ll likely encounter long staircases, steep inclines, uneven cobblestone streets, and limited vehicle access in some areas.

Comfortable shoes are absolutely essential, even if you change into wedding shoes later.

If mobility or accessibility is important for you or your guests, this is something worth planning around when choosing accommodations and ceremony locations.

Private Drivers Are Worth It

While renting a car can work for some couples, many people find the Amalfi Coast far more enjoyable without driving themselves.

Parking is limited, roads are narrow, and traffic can be intense during peak season. Not to mention, ferries can have limited schedules and the buses can be slow and packed.

Hiring private transportation can honestly remove so much stress and allows you to fully enjoy the scenery without worrying about navigating coastal roads.

Book Early If You’re Eloping In Peak Season

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most in-demand elopement destinations in the world, and things book up fast — especially from May through September.

This includes:

  • Hotels and villas

  • Private boat charters

  • Hair and makeup artists

  • Luxury dinner reservations

  • Photography and elopement vendors

If you’re planning a peak-season elopement, booking early will give you significantly more options and flexibility.

Pack Light + Thoughtfully

Because of the stairs, ferries, and walkability of many coastal towns, hauling large heavy luggage around the Amalfi Coast can become exhausting quickly.

I highly recommend:

  • Packing lighter than you think

  • Bringing comfortable walking shoes

  • Wearing breathable fabrics in summer

  • Packing layers for evenings and boat rides

  • Using luggage that’s easy to carry up stairs

Even during warmer months, evenings on the water can sometimes feel cooler than expected

Language in Italy

Italian is the primary language spoken throughout Italy, but in most Amalfi Coast tourist areas, many locals working in hospitality, restaurants, hotels, and tourism speak at least some English.

That said, learning a few basic Italian phrases goes a long way and is always appreciated.

Simple phrases like:

  • “Grazie” (thank you)

  • “Per favore” (please)

  • “Buongiorno” (good morning)

  • “Il conto, per favore” (the bill, please)

can honestly make interactions feel much warmer and more immersive.

One important thing to know: in Italy, servers generally won’t automatically bring the check unless you ask for it.

So if you’re ready to pay, simply ask:
“Il conto, per favore.”

Payment in Italy

Italy uses the Euro (€).

Most hotels, restaurants, and businesses along the Amalfi Coast accept credit cards, debit cards, and contactless payment

However, I still highly recommend carrying some cash, especially for:

  • Smaller cafes

  • Beach clubs

  • Ferry snacks

  • Taxis

  • Small shops

  • Tipping small service staff

ATMs are common throughout larger towns like Amalfi and Positano.

Tipping Culture in Italy

Tipping in Italy is much more relaxed than in the United States.

At restaurants:

  • A service fee or “coperto” is often already included

  • Large tips are not expected

  • Rounding up or leaving a small additional amount for great service is appreciated

For elopement vendors:

  • Tipping is appreciated but never expected

  • Thoughtful reviews and referrals honestly go a very long way

This generally makes budgeting for your Amalfi Coast elopement much more straightforward compared to destinations where heavy tipping is standard.

Amalfi Coast Elopement FAQ’s

  • Amalfi Coast elopements can vary a lot in price depending on the season, guest count, accommodations, and overall experience you want to create.

For couples planning an intimate elopement with just the two of you, most Amalfi Coast elopements typically fall somewhere between $10,000–$30,000+ once you factor in:

    • Travel

    • Accommodations

    • Photography

    • Hair and makeup

    • Florals

    • Boat charters

    • Private dinners

    • Transportation

    • Attire

Luxury villa elopements or multi-day celebrations with guests can increase significantly from there.

One of the biggest pricing factors on the Amalfi Coast is honestly accommodations, especially in places like Positano during peak season.

  • I typically recommend spending at least 4–7 days on the Amalfi Coast if you’re traveling internationally for your elopement.

    This gives you time to:

    • Recover from travel

    • Explore different towns

    • Build flexibility into your schedule

    • Actually enjoy the experience instead of rushing through it

Many couples also combine the Amalfi Coast with other parts of Italy like:

    • Rome

    • Florence

    • Venice

    • Dolomites

    • Sicily

  • The Amalfi Coast works beautifully for both.

    Many couples choose:

    • A true “just us” elopement

    • A small wedding with 10–20 guests

    • A multi-day wedding experience with family and friends

There are so many incredible villas, boutique hotels, terraces, and restaurants that work perfectly for intimate weddings without needing a massive venue.

  • There honestly isn’t one “best” town — it depends on the experience you want.

Positano → iconic, colorful, luxurious, lively
    Ravello → romantic, elegant, quieter
Praiano → peaceful, intimate, less crowded
    Amalfi → central, convenient, historic
    Capri → luxurious island vibes

A lot of couples also choose to stay in one town while exploring multiple areas throughout their trip.

  • No — most couples will be completely fine speaking English throughout the Amalfi Coast tourist areas.

Hotels, restaurants, transportation services, and most wedding vendors are very used to international travelers.

That said, learning a few basic Italian phrases is always appreciated and can make the experience feel even more immersive.

  • During peak season (especially June–August), yes — the Amalfi Coast can get very busy.

However, there are plenty of ways to avoid the heaviest crowds:

    • Planning sunrise portraits

    • Choosing quieter towns like Praiano

    • Eloping during shoulder season

    • Exploring less touristy locations

    • Staying in private villas instead of central hotel areas

The coastline feels completely different early in the morning compared to midday.

  • For most couples, the best months are:

    • May

    • June

    • September

    • Early October

These months typically offer the best balance of:

    • Warm weather

    • Ferry access

    • Long daylight hours

    • Beautiful scenery

    • Smaller crowds compared to peak summer

September is honestly one of my personal favorite times because the weather is still beautiful, the sea is warm, and the atmosphere feels slightly more relaxed than July or August.

  • Yes — but it’s important to know that many beaches on the Amalfi Coast are small, public, and extremely busy during summer.

Because of this, many couples instead choose:

    • Private terraces

    • Villas

    • Scenic overlooks

    • Boat ceremonies

    • Sunrise beach portraits

    for a more intimate experience.

Boat elopements are honestly one of the best alternatives if you want that coastal Mediterranean feel without dealing with large crowds.

  • You absolutely can plan an Amalfi Coast elopement yourselves, but for couples hosting guests, booking villas, coordinating transportation, or legally marrying in Italy, a planner can make a huge difference.

The Amalfi Coast has a lot of moving logistical pieces, including:

    • Transportation

    • Ferry schedules

    • Permit considerations

    • Vendor coordination

    • Language barriers

    • Timeline planning

Having someone local helping navigate those details can honestly remove so much stress.

  • For peak-season Amalfi Coast elopements, I typically recommend planning:

    • 12–18 months in advance for larger or luxury celebrations

    • 6–12 months in advance for smaller elopements

Luxury hotels and villas book out surprisingly early, especially in Positano and Ravello.

If you’re flexible with dates or planning during shoulder season, you can sometimes plan on a shorter timeline.

  • Absolutely — and honestly, that’s one of the best parts.

Your elopement can be so much more than just a ceremony. Many couples include:

    • Boat charters

    • Private chef dinners

    • Vespa rides

    • Island hopping

    • Beach days

    • Cooking classes

    • Wine tastings

    • Exploring multiple coastal towns

    • Sunset cruises

The best Amalfi Coast elopements usually feel immersive and experience-focused rather than overly structured or traditional.
