You don’t have to be a master wordsmith William Shakespeare or Virginia Woolf to come up with romantic wedding vow ideas that are also incredibly meaningful. As long as you speak authentically, your true self will shine through your words and your vows will be deeply significant and unforgettable.
Some essential advice for writing vows that I share with all my couples is to communicate the promises you want to make to your partner, the intentions you have for your life together, and the deep connection that you feel. When you’re speaking these sorts of deep truths, you’ll be speaking a message of true love.
So don’t stress out about getting the wording of your vows absolutely perfect. Just say what’s in your heart and I promise you’ll wind up with exactly the vows you want!
How To Write Heartfelt Wedding Vows That Feel Authentic
To help couples write vows from the heart, I always encourage them to answer the following questions:
What do you love most about your partner?
When did you know they were “the one”?
What do you want to promise them — not just on this one special day, but for every day that will follow for the rest of your lives?
Answering these questions can help you get to the deep roots of your love and help you put into words the most meaningful and important feelings you have for them.
It’s also important to note that these are deeply personal questions, so they’re going to have deeply personal answers that are unique to you and to your love story — perfectly tailored to the love that you feel.
Take Notes!
When you’re writing your vows, it’s always a good idea to have a method on hand for taking notes so that you can jot down key ideas and moments of inspiration as they hit you.
I always encourage my couples to consider journaling or using the voice notes feature on their phone to record ideas as they come to you. That way, when you find a way to put something meaningful into words, you’ll preserve it for future reference and nothing will slip away from you.
Use This Helpful Structure To Organize Your Vows
There’s a helpful template I always share with couples who are working on their vows to help them organize their thoughts and to make sure that they’re expressing everything important that’s in their heart. If you structure your vows into these four parts, you’ll wind up with heartstopping vows that are romantic, authentic, and beautiful.
1. Share a personal story or memory
This can help add specificity to your vows and give your words a truly unique and personal feel. Nobody has experienced your love story except the two of you, and sharing a meaningful moment or cherished memory from your journey together will deepen the emotional impact of your words in a way that is completely your own.
2. Share what you love about your partner
You’ll be amazed how quickly the words will come to you if you just speak from the heart about what it is you love about your partner. You’ll find it hard for you to stop yourself from saying absolutely everything that springs to mind!
When you’re looking into their eyes and speaking from the heart about all the qualities that make them amazing, you’re guaranteed to end up with deeply moving, personal, and unforgettable vows.
3. Share your promises
This part is important since it makes up the real core of your vows. What commitments are you making to your partner in this moment? In what ways will you be there for them not just today, but for all the days that follow?
4. Close with your hopes for the future
Your wedding day is just the first step on a lifelong journey together, and your vows are an awesome opportunity to meditate on your hopes for that journey and your dreams for the future. Let your partner know what you hope your lifelong partnership has in store for the two of you.
