Anyone who has gotten married in Iceland will tell you that there’s a special kind of magic to an Iceland elopement! This amazing country truly has it all: a unique and bewitching landscape that makes you feel like you’ve entered a whole other world, a rich and unique cultural heritage, and a romantic atmosphere perfect for weddings and elopements of all kinds. There are also tons of opportunities for epic adventures and thrilling exploration.
If you’re considering an elopement in Iceland, it can be hard to figure out where to begin — there’s simply so much to do and see that it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Fortunately, this comprehensive Iceland elopement guide has got you covered!

How To Get To Iceland
By Plane:
No matter what, you’ll have to fly into Iceland as it is an island! The best way is to fly into the Keflavik International Airport (KEF). This is located in Reykjavik and it is the main international airport located in Iceland! Drive time to your elopement location will of course depend on where you choose to elope as Iceland is fairly large! It is about a 2 hour drive to the South Coast where many popular elopement locations are.
By Car:
You will need a rental car while you explore Iceland! You’ll be able to get to many places in low elevations with a standard sedan, but if you’d like to explore some higher elevation locations located on ‘F Roads’, you’ll need a high clearance vehicle from a rental agency that allows you to drive on these roads. You’ll also want a 4WD vehicle if you are choosing to visit in the shoulder seasons like Spring and Fall. I’d recommend reserving your car rental sooner rather than later—most car rentals are manual transmission and automatic transmission can get booked up fast! Be sure when you are reserving that your car has automatic transmission if you do not drive manual. As an American, be sure to get your $20 International Drivers License before you go!
A few general tips: don’t let your gas tank run empty as gas stations can be sparse, do NOT speed—there are speed cams located sporadically and you will receive a hefty fine in the mail after your trip (like $670 USD expensive), livestock roams free in the countryside, you’ll likely drive on unpaved roads at a point, and gas is really expensive (i.e. $7 per gallon). The best and most extensive blog I’ve seen is this one and it covers EVERYTHING you need to know about renting a car in Iceland.
Pro Tip: Download offline Google Maps directions on your phone so that even when you lose service, you can still receive navigation. As beautiful as the scenery is, getting lost probably isn’t on your to-do list!
The Best Time Of Year To Elope In Iceland
Iceland is beautiful all year, so the time that you choose to visit for your Iceland adventure elopement depends entirely on what kind of experience you’re looking for and what kinds of activities you’re planning to do during your visit. Each season offers something special.
Spring
Spring is the perfect time to elope in Iceland if you’re hoping for mild weather, gorgeous scenery with tons of blooming wildflowers, and vibrant green fields. Spring is also when the crowds of tourists start to thin out, so you can find plenty of secluded, intimate spots for the perfect elopement ceremony!
Summer
Have you ever been somewhere where the sun never sets? That’s the kind of otherworldly experience you can expect when you elope in Iceland in the summer. During the summer months, the sun in Iceland simply does not set. If you’re planning on chasing the midnight sun, you should definitely plan on coming to Iceland in the summer.
If you’re planning an Iceland elopement in the summer months, keep in mind that this is the country’s peak tourist season, so you’ll have to do a bit of planning ahead in order to beat the crowds at some of the more popular tourist spots.
Autumn
During the autumn months, Iceland’s natural beauty is elevated to a whole other level as the leaves start to change and the entire country erupts in a panoply of stunning colors. Late fall is also when the Northern Lights start to become especially visible in Iceland’s night sky.
One thing to be mindful of if you’re planning an Iceland adventure elopement in the autumn is that the fall weather can sometimes be a bit unpredictable. You’ll want to pack plenty of warm layers just in case the temperature dips unexpectedly during your visit!
Winter
It probably won’t shock you to learn that winter in Iceland can get pretty cold. That being said, if you pack accordingly and don’t mind bundling up, you can expect to encounter some of the most stunning natural beauty on Earth.
As the weather gets colder, Iceland becomes blanketed with snow, transforming the country into an ethereal, otherworldly landscape that will absolutely take your breath away. Winter is also one of the best times of year to see the Northern Lights (along with late autumn)! Best Places to Elope in Iceland
There are so many incredible spots for an elopement ceremony in Iceland, that it can be hard to figure out where to even begin. The country is a treasure trove of gorgeous landscapes and breathtaking views, and selecting the place that’s perfect for you can sometimes seem a bit daunting.
Still, even among the seemingly endless perfect elopement spots in Iceland, there are a few highlights that you’ll definitely want to consider.
An Iceland elopement at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is absolutely guaranteed to be completely unforgettable. Imagine exchanging your vows on the shore of the sea as the golden hour tones of the sunset dapple the water with bewitching shades of dusky orange and red.
In addition to the breathtaking views, you’ll also find plenty of natural caves and awe-inspiring cliff faces to explore.
On the southwestern coast of Iceland, you’ll find one of the country’s greatest natural treasures: the Skógafoss Waterfall.
Everything about eloping at Skógafoss Waterfall is amazing — with its staggering, awe-inspiring size and its incredible hiking trails, it serves as a backdrop to some truly epic elopement photos!
Many people say that there are fairies living in Iceland, and if that’s true then they definitely spend a lot of time on Kirkjufell Mountain. This lush, green mountain covered in surging rivers and towering waterfalls looks like it came straight out of a children’s story. If you’re aiming for some truly unique elopement photos in Iceland, this is definitely a spot to consider.
This glacial lake is the deepest lake in Iceland, and its sheer size and otherworldly beauty leaves me awe-inspired every single time I visit!
In the winter months, Jökulsárlón is a particularly great spot for a Northern Lights elopement experience in Iceland. Since the lagoon is so far off the beaten path and so far away from any city lights, you’ll have a perfect view of every detail of the night sky, and when the aurora borealis are shimmering over Iceland, there are few places in the entire country that offer a better view!
Pro Tip: there are also TONS of glacier lagoons just like this one without all the big crowds.
Múlagljúfur Canyon is a hidden gem near Iceland’s South Coast, known for its mossy cliffs, winding river, and dramatic waterfalls. A short hike leads to sweeping canyon views that feel remote and cinematic without heavy crowds. It’s an ideal spot for couples who want an adventurous elopement with a quieter, more intimate atmosphere.
The Westfjords offer some of Iceland’s most remote and untouched landscapes, with towering cliffs, quiet fjords, and powerful waterfalls. Eloping here feels wild and secluded, perfect for couples who value solitude, slow travel, and a true sense of exploration.
The Highlands
The Icelandic Highlands are best for couples seeking a bold, once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Known for colorful volcanic mountains, moon like scenery, and vast open landscapes, this region feels completely untouched. Access requires extra planning, but the reward is an unforgettable, wildly unique elopement experience.
Hidden Gem Locations
The best spots in Iceland to me? The hidden gem and the off-the-beaten-path locations that don’t see as many tourists. When I say that Iceland is nearly entirely FULL of beautiful landscapes, I mean it. It rarely feels like you are driving through a location that isn’t straight out of a post card. So I love finding that secret hidden waterfall, that untouched black sand beach, and a little hidden natural hot spring.

Do We Need a Permit to Elope in Iceland?
In most cases, no permit is required to elope in Iceland. You’re free to choose from many of the country’s iconic landscapes—as long as you follow local regulations and respect the Icelandic Pledge. I’ll help you navigate all the logistics so your elopement is legally sound and responsibly planned.
Can Foreigners Get Married in Iceland?
Yes. U.S. citizens and citizens in other countries can legally get married in Iceland, and the marriage will be legally recognized in the United States. Luckily, the process of getting legally married in Iceland as a foreigner is much easier compared to other countries!
How to Get an Iceland Marriage License
If you are wanting to legally get married in Iceland, here is the step by step process you will need to take to get your marriage license. If you choose this route, I strongly recommend working with a local wedding planner. They can manage the paperwork, submit documents, and coordinate required appointments on your behalf, making the process significantly smoother.
Obtain and fill out the required documents below.
Marriage notification, also known as hjónavígsluskýrsla. This is a document stating there are no legal impediments to your marriage.
A certificate of marital status from both parties, also known as a no marriage record. The certificate must be issued within 8 weeks prior to the wedding ceremony.
Passport copies
An itinerary of your trip (entrance and exit date)
The original copies of your birth certificate
If divorced —a divorce decree
If widowed — An official document showing that the assets and liabilities of the deceased spouse has been finalized/divided
Send in all the documents above to the National Registry Office in Reykjavik at least 3 weeks before your wedding date. I ALWAYS recommend sending it in a bit earlier just in case there has been an error or mistake that needs corrected.
You will set an appointment at the regional district commissioner office based on where your chosen ceremony locate is during the week before your elopement. During this meeting, they will review your documents and give you the marriage license. Note that you must also have the original documents with you. Usually, it is a quick 5 minute appointment!
All wedding ceremonies in Iceland require an officiant and two witnesses. Iceland has strict officiant requirements, so a friend or family member cannot legally officiate your elopement. To be legally married, you’ll need to hire an officiant who is authorized in Iceland. If having a loved one lead the ceremony is important to you, a symbolic ceremony is a great alternative. There are also organizations in Iceland that can pair you with a licensed officiant, which is often the easiest route.

If this process seems overwhelming, I always recommend getting married in your home country, then having a symbolic ceremony in Iceland! This is always the easiest and most stress-free option. There are also local planners you can hire who will specifically help with the marriage license portion.
Note: This process is specifically for foreigners getting married in Iceland. If you reside in Iceland or some of the surrounding European countries, the process will be different.
Where To Stay For Your Iceland Elopement
Reykjavík
Reykjavík is the best base for couples who want convenience, great dining, and easy access to tours and services. It’s ideal for elopements on the South Coast, Golden Circle, or for couples arriving late and easing into their trip. Reykjavík offers the widest selection of hotels, rental cars, florists, hair & makeup artists, and backup plans for unpredictable weather.
Best for: Easy logistics, short trips, modern comfortsic
Vík
Vík is one of the most popular towns for South Coast elopements. Located near black sand beaches, sea stacks, and dramatic cliffs, Vík places you close to iconic ceremony locations while still offering hotels, restaurants, and gas stations. It’s a great midpoint for sunrise or sunset elopements along the coast.
Best for: Black sand beaches, waterfalls, South Coast elopements
Höfn
Höfn is a fantastic option for couples eloping near glaciers, ice lagoons, and dramatic mountain backdrops. It’s quieter than Vík and ideal for couples continuing east after a South Coast ceremony. Höfn works especially well for multi-day elopements or Ring Road itineraries.
Best for: Glacier views, quieter stays, extended road trips
Akureyri
Akureyri is the best home base for elopements in North Iceland. Often called the “Capital of the North,” Akureyri offers a charming town atmosphere with excellent restaurants, cozy accommodations, and easy access to waterfalls, lava fields, and dramatic northern landscapes. It’s especially ideal for couples eloping near places like Goðafoss, Lake Mývatn, or planning a quieter, less-crowded Iceland experience away from the South Coast.
Best for: North Iceland elopements, fewer crowds, charming town vibes, summer or winter ceremonies
Stykkishólmur
Stykkishólmur is the best home base for elopements on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. This charming harbor town offers colorful buildings, coastal views, and easy access to cliffs, lava fields, and mountains. It feels peaceful and romantic without being isolated.
Best for: Snæfellsnes elopements, coastal scenery, slower pace
Ísafjörður
Ísafjörður is the largest town in the Westfjords and the most practical place to stay in this remote region. It’s ideal for couples seeking dramatic cliffs, fjords, and total solitude—while still having access to accommodations, restaurants, and fuel.
Best for: Remote elopements, Westfjords adventure, minimal crowds
Highland Base Areas (Seasonal)
For elopements in the Icelandic Highlands, accommodations are limited and highly seasonal. Most couples stay in mountain huts, remote lodges, or nearby towns outside the Highlands and drive in with a 4x4. These stays feel rugged, adventurous, and immersive.
Best for: Adventure-focused couples, summer elopements, 4x4 access
Pro Tip: If you are planning to be having guests at any point of the day for either a ceremony, intimate dinner, or reception, be sure to get an event-friendly rental! Not all vacation rentals are event friendly and nothing would be worse than getting kicked out by your host mid elopement experience! Must Know Iceland Elopement and Travel Tips
Eloping in Iceland is unforgettable—but it does come with unique logistics. These are the most important things couples should know before planning their day.
Unpredictable Weather
Iceland’s weather can change minute to minute—sun, wind, rain, and fog can all happen in one hour. Yes, even in the summer. The most successful elopements stay flexible with locations, timelines, and backup plans. Multi-day elopements are especially helpful for weather freedom.
English is Well Spoken
Iceland is a very English-friendly country! The residents learn English in school as a 2nd language and it is pretty universally spoken in Iceland. You shouldn’t have any problem reading or speaking to the Icelandic residents.
Bring Layers!
Even in the summer, you can experience unpredictable weather. Personally, I’ve experienced 40 degree Fahrenheit temperatures and rain during mid July! You can never be too prepared on this front when visiting Iceland.
Northern Lights
If seeing the northern lights is on your elopement wish list, timing matters. The aurora is visible in Iceland from September to March, and you’ll have the best chance away from city lights. Plan Your Elopement Around Light, Not the Clock
In summer, you’ll have nearly 24 hours of daylight. In winter, only a few hours. Sunrise and sunset don’t matter as much as quality of light.
Popular locations can also feel busy midday, especially May–September. This makes planning your elopement during off times of the day a win-win. Sunrise, late evening, weekdays, or shoulder seasons make a huge difference.
Follow the Icelandic Pledge & Leave No Trace
You can’t go anywhere just because it looks pretty. Iceland is known for their beautiful green moss, but many people don’t realize that moss is extremely fragile and can take thousands of years to fully heal. Stay on marked paths, avoid fragile moss, and respect closures and signage. Protecting the land isn’t optional—it’s essential, and it ensures Iceland stays accessible for future couples.
