If you're dreaming of an elopement surrounded by towering mountains, alpine lakes, and some of the most incredible scenery in Washington State, Leavenworth might just be the perfect place for you! Tucked away in the Cascade Mountains, this charming Bavarian-inspired town is surrounded by rugged mountain peaks, lush forests, and crystal-clear rivers, making it an incredible destination for couples looking for a little adventure on their wedding day.
One of my favorite things about eloping in Leavenworth is just how much variety there is! Whether you're dreaming of exchanging vows beside a turquoise alpine lake, hiking into the mountains for an intimate ceremony, exploring the beautiful landscapes of the Enchantments, or celebrating with your closest friends and family at a cozy mountain cabin, there are so many ways to make your elopement feel entirely your own. And with incredible scenery in every season, there's truly no shortage of beautiful places to explore!
If you're considering a Leavenworth elopement but aren't quite sure where to start, I've put together this guide to walk you through everything you need to know! From the best places to elope and what time of year to visit to permits, marriage licenses, accommodations, and fun activities to incorporate into your day, you'll find everything you need to start planning your dream elopement in Leavenworth, Washington!
How To Get To Leavenworth
By Plane:
The closest major airport to Leavenworth is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), located approximately 2.5 to 3 hours away by car. As Washington's largest airport, SEA offers plenty of nonstop flights from across the United States and internationally, making it the most convenient option for couples traveling from out of state.
Another option is Pangborn Memorial Airport (EAT) in Wenatchee, located about 40 minutes from Leavenworth. While this smaller regional airport has more limited flight options, it can be a great alternative if you're able to find a convenient connecting flight.
If you're planning to extend your trip and explore more of Washington, flying into Seattle also gives you the opportunity to visit Mount Rainier National Park, the North Cascades, and some of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in the Pacific Northwest before or after your elopement!
By Car:
Once you arrive in Seattle, renting a car is the best way to explore Leavenworth and the surrounding Cascade Mountains. The drive itself is absolutely beautiful, taking you through mountain passes, dense evergreen forests, and scenic valleys before arriving in the charming Bavarian-inspired town.
During the summer and early fall, most of Leavenworth's popular attractions and trailheads are accessible with a standard vehicle, although some remote locations may require driving on unpaved forest roads.
If you're eloping between late fall and early spring, I highly recommend considering an AWD or 4WD vehicle. Snow and icy conditions are common throughout the Cascade Mountains, particularly along Highway 2 over Stevens Pass. Washington may also require traction tires or chains depending on road conditions, so be sure to check current travel advisories before heading into the mountains.
Having your own vehicle gives you the flexibility to explore multiple locations throughout your elopement day, whether you're visiting alpine lakes, chasing waterfalls, or heading into the mountains for sunset portraits!
Pro Tip: Cell service can be extremely limited throughout the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, especially along remote mountain roads and near trailheads. Download offline Google Maps before your trip and check the Washington State Department of Transportation for current mountain pass conditions. It's one of the easiest ways to make your adventure a little more stress-free!
The Best Time Of Year To Elope In Mt Hood
One of my favorite things about eloping in Leavenworth is that every season offers something completely different! From turquoise alpine lakes and wildflower-filled meadows to golden larch trees, snow-covered mountains, and cozy cabins tucked away in the forest, there's truly something beautiful about this little mountain town year-round. The best time to elope in Leavenworth really depends on the kind of scenery, weather, and adventure you're envisioning for your wedding day.
Spring (April - June)
Spring in Leavenworth is such a beautiful time of transition! As the snow begins melting in the lower elevations, the forests become incredibly lush, waterfalls and rivers are flowing at their fullest, and the surrounding mountains are still covered in snow. Temperatures in town generally range from 50°F to 75°F, although conditions can be significantly colder in the mountains.
One important thing to keep in mind is that many of Leavenworth's most iconic alpine locations, including Colchuck Lake and the Enchantments, can remain covered in snow well into June or even early July. Some higher-elevation trails may require winter hiking experience and specialized equipment, so it's important to consider accessibility when planning your elopement.
Spring is a wonderful option for couples who love vibrant greenery, rushing waterfalls, snow-capped mountain backdrops, and a quieter experience before the busy summer season.
Summer (July - September)
Summer is easily one of the most popular times to elope in Leavenworth, and for good reason! The mountains come alive with beautiful wildflowers, alpine lakes begin thawing into incredible shades of turquoise, and the longer daylight hours create endless opportunities for exploring. Daytime temperatures in town typically range from 75°F to 90°F, although higher elevations are usually much cooler.
If you're dreaming of hiking to iconic locations like Colchuck Lake, exploring the Enchantments, or exchanging vows beside a beautiful alpine lake, this is generally the best time of year to do it! Most high-elevation trails become snow-free sometime between July and August, depending on the year's snowpack.
Summer also offers plenty of opportunities for couples who would rather skip the hiking altogether. From scenic lakes and rivers to beautiful mountain overlooks and private cabins, there are so many incredible places to celebrate without having to venture too far into the backcountry.
Because summer is peak season, popular trailheads and scenic locations can get pretty busy, especially on weekends. I always recommend considering a weekday or sunrise elopement for a quieter, more intimate experience!
Fall (Late September – October)
Fall might just be one of the most incredible times to elope in Leavenworth, especially if you love vibrant autumn colors! As temperatures begin cooling to around 45°F to 70°F, the surrounding forests transform into beautiful shades of gold, orange, and red. But what really makes this season special is the golden larch trees scattered throughout the alpine mountains!
Unlike most evergreen conifers, alpine larches turn a brilliant golden yellow before shedding their needles for winter. Locations throughout the Enchantments and surrounding mountains become absolutely breathtaking during this short window, typically peaking from late September through early October, depending on elevation and weather conditions.
Early fall can still offer excellent access to many of Leavenworth's alpine lakes and hiking trails, although snowfall can arrive unexpectedly at higher elevations. By late October, conditions can become much more unpredictable, so having a flexible timeline and backup location is especially important.
If you're dreaming of colorful mountain landscapes, crisp autumn air, cozy cabins, and a romantic fall atmosphere, this is such an incredible season to consider for your Leavenworth elopement!
Winter (November - March)
If you've always dreamed of a snowy mountain elopement, Leavenworth is an absolutely incredible place to get married in the winter! With its charming Bavarian-inspired architecture, snow-covered evergreens, dramatic mountain backdrops, and cozy cabins, the entire area feels like something straight out of a storybook. Temperatures in town generally range from 20°F to 40°F, although conditions can be significantly colder in the surrounding mountains.
Winter is especially beautiful around Lake Wenatchee, along the Wenatchee River, and throughout the snow-covered forests surrounding town. While many high-elevation hiking trails become inaccessible without specialized winter equipment and experience, there are still plenty of beautiful locations that can be reached with relatively little hiking.
One thing to keep in mind is that Leavenworth is an extremely popular winter destination, particularly during the holiday season when the town is decorated with festive lights. If you're hoping for a quieter experience, I recommend considering January through early March or planning your ceremony somewhere outside the busy downtown area.
Winter elopements do require a little more preparation, especially when it comes to snowy roads, freezing temperatures, and unpredictable mountain weather. But for couples who love the idea of bundling up, exploring snowy forests, and ending their wedding day beside a cozy fireplace, winter in Leavenworth can be absolutely magical!
The Best Places To Elope In Mt Hood
One of the best things about eloping in Leavenworth is the incredible variety of landscapes you can explore! Nestled in the heart of Washington's Cascade Mountains, this charming mountain town is surrounded by turquoise alpine lakes, rugged mountain peaks, lush evergreen forests, and beautiful riverside scenery. Whether you're dreaming of an adventurous hike into the Enchantments or a peaceful ceremony beside a lake with your closest friends and family, there are so many incredible places to choose from!
Here are some of my favorite locations to consider for your Leavenworth elopement, including options for adventurous couples and those looking for something a little more accessible.
Colchuck Lake
If you've been dreaming of a dramatic alpine lake surrounded by towering granite peaks, Colchuck Lake is easily one of the most incredible locations near Leavenworth! Nestled beneath Dragontail Peak, this stunning turquoise lake looks like something straight out of the European Alps.
Getting here requires a challenging hike of approximately 8–9 miles round trip, but the scenery is absolutely worth the effort for couples who love hiking. I recommend visiting between July and early October when the trails are typically more accessible.
Lake wenatchee
Lake Wenatchee is one of my favorite options for couples who want incredible mountain scenery without having to hike! Located about 25–30 minutes from Leavenworth, this beautiful glacier-fed lake is surrounded by forested mountains, with wide-open views across the water.
The park features easily accessible beaches, scenic shoreline areas, and beautiful forests, making it a wonderful option for couples who want to include a handful of their closest friends and family. You could exchange vows overlooking the lake, enjoy a lakeside picnic, or even incorporate kayaking or paddleboarding into your wedding day!
The Enchantments
If you're looking for a truly unforgettable adventure, the Enchantments are home to some of the most breathtaking alpine scenery in Washington State! Think crystal-clear lakes, dramatic granite peaks, rugged mountain landscapes, and beautiful golden larch trees during the fall.
This is an incredible option for experienced hikers who want to incorporate a backpacking adventure into their elopement. The Enchantments are especially stunning in late September and early October when the alpine larches turn brilliant shades of gold.
Because accessing the Core Enchantments requires significant hiking and elevation gain, this location is best suited for couples who are comfortable spending an entire day or multiple days in the backcountry.
Lake Valhalla
Lake Valhalla is another beautiful alpine lake located near Stevens Pass, approximately 40–45 minutes west of Leavenworth. Surrounded by evergreen forests and dramatic mountain peaks, this peaceful alpine setting is absolutely gorgeous during the summer and fall.
Reaching the lake typically involves a moderate hike of around 6–7 miles round trip, depending on your route. During the summer, you'll find beautiful mountain scenery and lush greenery, while fall brings colorful foliage to the surrounding mountainsides.
This is a wonderful alternative for couples who love the idea of an alpine lake elopement but want to explore somewhere other than Colchuck Lake.
Icicle Gorge
If you love the idea of exchanging vows surrounded by towering evergreens, rushing rivers, and beautiful mountain scenery, Icicle Gorge is such a wonderful location to consider!
Located along Icicle Creek, this scenic area features a relatively gentle 3.5–4 mile loop through beautiful forests, with several opportunities to enjoy the river and surrounding mountains. It's especially beautiful during late spring and summer when the forests are lush and the river is flowing.
While the full loop is several miles long, you don't necessarily have to hike the entire trail to enjoy the scenery. This makes it a great option for couples looking for a more relaxed adventure.
Downtown Leavenworth
With its charming Bavarian-inspired architecture, colorful storefronts, and beautiful mountain backdrop, downtown Leavenworth is such a fun place to incorporate into your elopement day! Wander through the streets, stop at a local café, grab a sweet treat from a bakery, or take some romantic portraits surrounded by the town's European-inspired charm. It's especially beautiful during winter when the streets are decorated with festive lights!
Pro Tip: Downtown can get pretty busy, especially on weekends and during the holidays, so I recommend visiting early in the morning or on a weekday for a quieter experience!
Eloping in Leavenworth With Guests
Planning to invite a few of your closest friends and family to your Leavenworth elopement? There are so many beautiful ways to include your favorite people while still keeping your wedding day intimate and adventurous!
For ceremonies taking place on public lands, I generally recommend keeping your guest count to 15 people or fewer, including the two of you. Smaller groups make it easier to follow Leave No Trace principles, navigate limited parking at trailheads, and find beautiful locations that can comfortably accommodate everyone without impacting the surrounding environment. Keep in mind that some locations have even stricter group-size restrictions, so it's always important to check the specific regulations and permit requirements for your chosen ceremony spot.
If you're planning to celebrate with more than 15 people, I recommend considering a private venue for your ceremony and reception! This doesn't mean you have to sacrifice the adventurous side of your elopement, either. You can spend the morning exploring the mountains, visiting an alpine lake, or sharing private vows somewhere beautiful before meeting up with your loved ones for your ceremony and celebration.
Here are a few beautiful wedding venues in the Leavenworth area worth considering:
Brown Family Homestead – A charming historic homestead surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, perfect for intimate outdoor weddings.
Silvara Vineyard – A scenic vineyard with beautiful views of the surrounding Cascade Mountains, offering a romantic setting for your celebration.
Alpine Lakes High Camp – A secluded mountain retreat with rustic cabins and incredible alpine scenery, perfect for couples dreaming of a more adventurous wedding experience.
Pro Tip: Even if you're including guests in your celebration, I always recommend setting aside a little time for just the two of you! Whether that means sharing private vows at sunrise, exploring a scenic trail together, or sneaking away for sunset portraits, having those quieter moments can make your wedding day feel even more personal and intentional.
What Do You Need to Elope in Leavenworth?
Before you exchange vows surrounded by the beautiful Cascade Mountains, there are a few legal details to take care of! Thankfully, Washington makes the marriage process relatively simple, and once you've checked a few boxes, you'll be free to focus on what really matters: celebrating your marriage in one of the most beautiful places in the Pacific Northwest.
As a Leavenworth elopement photographer, I help all of my couples navigate these logistics, from choosing the perfect ceremony location to understanding permits and creating a relaxed, stress-free timeline.
Here's everything you'll need to legally elope in Leavenworth, Washington!
Marriage License
Before you can officially tie the knot, you'll need to obtain a Washington State marriage license.
Where to Get It:
Leavenworth is located in Chelan County, so you can obtain your marriage license through the Chelan County Auditor's Office in Wenatchee, approximately 30–40 minutes from Leavenworth. However, Washington marriage licenses are valid statewide, so you can also apply through another county, such as King County if you're flying into Seattle.
What You'll Need:
Valid identification for both partners, as required by the issuing county
Basic personal information for both partners
Payment for the marriage license fee
Both partners' signatures on the application
Cost:
A marriage license through Chelan County currently costs $157, with an optional additional $3 for a certified copy of your marriage certificate. Fees may vary if you choose to apply through another Washington county.
Pro Tip: If you're traveling from out of state, Chelan County also offers an absentee marriage license application process, allowing you to complete the paperwork by mail before arriving in Washington. This can be especially helpful if you're planning a destination elopement and want to avoid making an extra trip to the county auditor's office!
Pro Tip:
Washington has a mandatory three-day waiting period before your marriage license becomes valid, and this waiting period cannot be waived. Once valid, your marriage license can be used for 60 days, so I recommend applying well ahead of your elopement date to avoid any last-minute stress!
Witnesses
Washington requires two witnesses to be present at your ceremony and sign your marriage certificate. There isn't a specific minimum age established for witnesses under Washington marriage law, but they must be capable of understanding and witnessing the ceremony.
If you're planning an intimate elopement with just the two of you, don't worry! Your photographer (that's me!) and another person can serve as your witnesses, making it easy to keep your celebration small and personal.
Officiant
To legally marry in Washington, you'll also need an authorized officiant to perform your ceremony.
Your officiant can be:
A judge or other authorized judicial officer
An ordained or otherwise authorized religious minister
A friend or family member who becomes ordained and meets Washington's legal requirements
Many couples choose to have a close friend or family member officiate, making their ceremony feel even more meaningful and personal.
Just So You Know: I'm also an ordained officiant and can help with the legal side of your elopement! If you're dreaming of a private vow exchange without a traditional officiant-led ceremony, we can discuss how to incorporate the legal requirements into your day while keeping the experience intimate and true to you.
Permits
Many of Leavenworth's most beautiful elopement locations are located within the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, including popular destinations throughout the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Other locations, such as Lake Wenatchee State Park, are managed by Washington State Parks.
Depending on where you choose to elope, you may need a special use permit, special activity permit, or other authorization to hold your ceremony.
Permit requirements can vary based on your chosen location, guest count, ceremony setup, and whether you're planning to bring decorations or other equipment. Some wilderness areas also have strict group-size limits and additional restrictions designed to protect the surrounding environment.
The good news? You don't have to figure everything out on your own! I help all of my couples research ceremony locations, determine which permits may be required, navigate the application process, and create an elopement experience that respects the beautiful landscapes we're lucky enough to explore.
Where To Stay For Your Leavenworth Elopement
Whether you're dreaming of a charming Bavarian-inspired hotel, a cozy A-frame tucked away in the forest, or a luxurious mountain cabin with a hot tub overlooking the Cascades, Leavenworth has no shortage of incredible places to stay! Many couples choose to spend several days in the area, allowing plenty of time to slow down, explore the mountains, and truly soak in their elopement experience.
Here are some of my favorite places to consider staying for your Leavenworth elopement!
Pro Tip: If you're planning to host guests for your ceremony, private dinner, or celebration at your vacation rental, make sure you book an event-friendly property! Many Airbnb and Vrbo rentals do not allow weddings or events, even small ones. Always confirm the property's rules and obtain permission from the host before booking.
